Research


The Division of Natural Areas encourages researchers, both students and professional, to consider Maywoods and Lilley Cornett Woods as research sites. There is a wide variety of research opportunities at both natural areas. In order to conduct research at etiher site, a proposal must be submitted in writing prior to the research. The following are the procedures for submission of a proposal.

  1. Write the proposal to include:
  • Purpose
  • Justification
  • Detailed outline of methodology
  • Review of literature
  1. Submit the proposal to the Director of the Division of Natural Areas.
  2. The proposal will be reviewed by the Division of Natural Areas Advisory Committee for sound methodology.
  3. the Division of Natural Areas Director will notify the reasearcher of the committee's decision.
  4. Assuming acceptance, the researcher should contact the manager of the appropiate natural area to set up a site visit to begin the research.
  5. Any research that is published will be a signed a contribution number.
  6. A copy of the manuscript approved for publication must be filed with the Director.
  7. Reprints of published research must be supplied to the Director for distribution at Eastern Kentucky University.

General collecting of any living and non-living specimens is prohibited at both natural areas However, collecting for scientific purposes is not prohibited. To collect any plant, animal, soil, rock, water, archeological artifact, and any other living or non-living specimen for research purposes, a collecting permit is required. A written permit must be obtained from the Director. Application forms are available at the Division of Natural Areas or through the managers of Lilley Cornett Woods and Maywoods. Violation or abuse of this privilege will lead to permanent revocation of a permit, denial of future permits and may lead to termination of planned or on-going research projects.
