Welcome to the Center for Environmental Education at Eastern Kentucky University

The Eastern Kentucky University's Center for Environmental Education was established in the autumn of 2002 through grant funding distributed to each of the state universities by Murray State University. The initial financial support was developed by the efforts of Congressman Ed Whitfield and Senator Jim Bunning in conjunction with the United States Department of Education. Recently, additional financial support had been provided through the PRIDE fund (HB 174), established by 2000 regular session of the Kentucky General Assembly. The Kentucky Environmental Education Council is responsible for the distribution of the interest from the Pride fund to the 8 Centers for Environmental Education in Kentucky. To ensure collabrative environmental educational efforts between the 8 state universities, the Kentucky University Partnership for Environmental Education (KUPEE) was established.

EKU's Center for Environmental Education has four goals. First, is to provide environmental education training for the preservice and inservice teachers on a local and regional level. Second, is to coordinate regional services with other institutions of higher learning. Third, develop environmental programs and curriculum. Finally, the CEE conducts and evaluates research in environmental education, and assists the community in understanding environmental issues. To acheive these goals, EKU's Center for Environmental Education offers preservice and inservice teacher training and professional development workshops. In conjunction with the College of Education and the College of Arts and Science at EKU, the CEE supports graduate level course work leading to an environmental education endorsement for K-12 teachers. Other projects the CEE has been involved with include, development of Earth Day projects in collaboration with Eastern Kentucky Environmental Research Institute, collaboratiing with other institutions on teacher training, and writing grants to promote availability of resources for local and regional classrooms.
